From Kaddish. “Amen.” The tiny Hebrew word denotes faith, hope, enthusiasm, finality, belonging, the answerability of man. In the Talmud they speak of an “orphaned amen.” An orphaned amen is an amen uttered after a blessing that you have not heard. An orphaned amen is forbidden.
Text: 1 Cor 14: 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say?
I. Amen means…
To get a scriptural answer to what “Amen” means, we go to a place where it is used not as the last word but the first word. Jesus would often start a solemn statement by saying “Verily” or “Truly”. In John’s gospel (eg John 3:3) Jesus is recorded as using the word twice in succession, “Verily, verily, I say to you…”. This is actually the word “Amen”.
When we compare an instance of this in Mark, with the same statement in Luke, we find Mark has left the word untranslated (just as αμην “Amen”), but Luke has translated it using the word αληθος “Truly”. (Mark 9:1, Luke 9:27). This shows us that the underlying meaning of the word “Amen” is truth and verity. It is a solemn affirmation. When we say, “Amen” we are saying, “Yes before God I agree with that, I believe that to be true, I want that to be so”.
II. Amen tells us about God
In the OT it is about our amens to God’s judgment.
Our amen to bless His Name.
It changes somewhat in the NT.
All four gospels end with an amen, the affirmation of what was written was true, as do the 3 parts of psalms as well as many of Paul’s letters and Revelation.
In Romans as Paul describes the everlasting blessedness of God he adds the amen asking us to read the amen in relationship to the glory of God. This was done in the OT also.
So here is a bible study for anyone to do. As I looked at the amens, it seemed liked there was so much of the gospel message included with the amens. The Jews had it down with an amen to a far away God. Our amens meet us right where we are living and seemed to cry out to us to come closer to the blessed God.

III. Can you say amen.
It blessed me to look up and think about these verses. Can you say amen?
Do you want to be blessed? Can you say amen?
Would you give God the time to look up and think about these verses?
Can you say amen?
The OT and the NT. The law and grace. You can see it just with the amens. We also get this: Isa 65:16 So that he who blesses himself in the earth Shall bless himself in the God of truth (amen); And he who swears in the earth Shall swear by the God of truth; Because the former troubles are forgotten, And because they are hidden from My eyes.
