To Do List
God gives out to do lists. Noah’s to do list. Moses’ to do list. The church’s to do list.
Can God give you a to do list? What would you do with it if He did?
Text: James 1:18-25 Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. 19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. 21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
I. “Of His own will”
Using the “word of truth”
So we “might”
Because of this possibility we should be “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” and “laying aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness” we should receive the “implanted word”.
That said, what do we do with this Word that is implanted into our souls?
“Be doers of the word”
What word has God implanted into your soul?
How and when does this happen?
These moments happen in Christian’s lives. Why? Because He “brought us forth” with this purpose of planting His word into our souls. It can be here at church. It can be while your are driving to work. It can be in a casual word that someone speaks to you or it can be in a dream while you sleep. This is the Christian’s reality.
He says to be a “doer” but some just hear.
He describes the mirror as receiving that implanted word. You hear it, you recognize it but as you leave the mirror or the mirror that has looked into your soul you forget about the moment and you tossed aside the thought and you continue on with life as if though God has not reached out to you at all.
You deceive yourself into thinking that God is not trying to do anything with or in your life.
III. The Do To List from God John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 1 Thess 2:13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
What would a portrait of you that reflected your spiritual condition look like if it were to be painted by the Holy Ghost?
Take a blank card and write the things God wants you to do.
