I have been preaching character studies on Wed. nights. Last night I looked at some of the Roman centurions of the New Testament starting with the centurion of Luke 7. You will notice the great relationship he has with the local Jewish population. You get that sense of a Petraeus strategy being used by the Romans. We moved to the centurion at the foot of the cross declaring “truly this was the Son of God” in Mt 27:54. Then onto Cornelius of Acts 10. Then onto Julius; the centurion who escorted Paul to Rome in Acts 27
The gospel of Christ couldn’t have helped but have made its way through the legions of Rome. Concluding with these two verses showing the infiltration of the gospel into the highest levels of Roman life via Roman soldiers:
Phil 4:22 All the saints send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household.
Phil 1:12-14 Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.
I mentioned the Radersdorf son who is the Marine who accompanies President Obama to and from Camp David on the helicoptor. It makes for a great bible thread.
