Memorial Day Service

We had good services yesterday. We had taken Audra Lea to the airport Tuesday after a trip to “the hill”, Saint Louis’ Italian neighborhood, where I ate a delicious hot salami sandwich. Late Saturday night we picked up Billy and Brooke, Brooke now being 5 months pregnant.

I preached Sunday morning about heroes, sacrifice, passion and having a reason to run. I used a Memorial Day story from Matt Holzmann that gave me a three-part illustration that illustrated perfectly the different themes of the sermon.

That night we watched “Taking Chance”. I thought watching the film this second Memorial Day would be less emotional, it was just as emotionally powerful this time as last. Added to that was the presence of our own soldier who had been a turret gunner just like “Chance” in the film. It helps us all to remember what Memorial Day is all about and to give a measure of dignity and respect to those who have served.
