National Athiest Day

Jared and I stood on a corner here in Sparta for about half an hour today holding two signs: “Celebrate National Atheist Day” and “Today is National Atheist Day”. Today is April 1st or April Fools Day. The point being that as the signs create a stir, it will lead to an acknowledgement of it being April Fools Day and finally to a biblical connection:

Ps 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

I have held up “Jesus” signs with little or no reaction. Most people as you try to make eye contact with them look away and you observe the twisting of the neck away from the sign as soon as they recognize the Christian theme. With this sign I avoided eye contact and tried to look as stern as possible. We heard some “f” you’s and a “Jesus Loves You”. The police showed up after 30 minutes and let us know that they had been flooded with complaints. The policemen, we talked with two of them, both failed to see the April 1 connection. We got two sets of instructions: one we could walk around with the signs, but not stand in one place on public property; the other that we could not display the signs on public property. Both officers allowed me to walk through the nature of this “Guerrilla Spiritual Warfare”. One got some understanding that he was able to relay back to the station, the other, as soon as I quoted the verse above, abruptly stopped me and told me not to preach to him. That is what will eventually happen as this winds its way through the lives of those people who saw the signs. They will realize that it is April 1 and should they talk to a Christian with some bible knowledge they might even hear the verse “The fool has said in his heart; there is no God”.

Still amazing that we could live in a nation that might actually believe that our Congress has created a “National Atheist Day” all in the name of diversity.
