Pastor Campbell brings an intensity to the story of Samson in Judges 14 with a sermon entitled “The Myth of Gifting”. He brought out the context of gifting with these verses: Eph 4:8 Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men." 1 Cor 12:4 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
There is an element of the sad witness of gifted men who have failed in the spiritual battle.
Samson always is depending upon his gifting to get him out of his life problems, many caused by his immorality. The lion comes and his gifting arises in him as he slays the lion. When he is alone walking home he sees the carcass of the lion, now filled with honey, and with no one looking he breaks his Nazarite vow and eats the honey. When he is alone he shows himself to not have enough character to restrain himself.
Gifting without character leads to a profane life where nothing is sacred.
